Modern Plus Sign Quilts - Blog Hop

Welcome to the second day of the Modern Plus Sign Quilts blog tour ! I am thrilled to be a part of it and to introduce you this new book co-authored by Cheryl Brickey from Meadow Mist Designs and Paige Alexander from Quilted Blooms.

The book contains 16 easy to follow patterns exploring the Plus Sign block in different sizes from runner to bed quilt. This block is showcased in simple or more complex projects using a variety of techniques such as traditional piecing, fusible applique and paper piecing.

The participants were asked to choose a pattern from the book as a starting point for a making. A couple caught my eye when I went through the pictures though I settled on Tribal Plus pattern fairly quickly. The reason is I envisioned it straight away with Arizona After collection by April Rhodes for Art Gallery Fabrics.

I had my eye on that collection for a while but I had no idea to use it. Taking part in the Blog Hop was then an excuse to order some prints and coordinated solids !

It was my first time working with Art Gallery Fabrics only and I was anxious to see how it would go. The texture is a bit different from other quilting cotton fabrics. They are thinner and have a slightly silky feel. I had to use a thinner machine needle as usual (70 instead of 80). Has anybody else experienced the same thing ?

I slightly enlarged the size of the Plus block using a 2.25" square instead of a 2" square since I wanted a quilt larger than the original pattern. The block can easily be reduced or enlarged as needed. You could also make additional rows or on the contrary make less of them to adapt the design to a custom quilt size.

The prints I chose are directional and since I wanted to make sure they were straight cut I decided not to use the quick strip piecing method suggested by Paige. A longer process but the result was worth it ...

Combining beautiful weather and a helper available for the photoshoot has not been possible ... So I thank my son for helping me despite this freezing and gloomy day (without protesting too much ...).

  2. I love your snow pictures . Very atmospheric. I used art gallery fabric to back my daughter's bed quilt and I found it to be a lighter weight fabric too . But the design of the deer heads was perfect

Tu as, à mon sens, bonifié le modèle.

  7. Beautiful version of Tribal Plus, I love the gradient like affect from the prints! Thanks so much for taking part in the hop! I have the same experience with Art Gallery prints, I find that washing them and then using a thinner needle does help.

  21. Hello Sophie,
I adore your Modern Plus Sign quilt and absolutely love the southwest Arizona After collection too from April RHodes. In fact I have many of her collections and just completed my Tracery quilt with three of her collections (Arizona , Wanderer and Arizona After) Yes I've experienced quilting and sewing with Art Gallery Cottons. The fabric is so soft, like Percale. Indeed I've had to adjust my needle size as you did. Thank you for sharing , I've lots of inspiration on your blog.

  33. Sophie, so pretty! I love how you fussy cut some of the prints and used subtle prints on the top and bottom with the contrasting in the center. I haven't sewn a great deal with Art Gallery, thank you for the tip using the smaller needle. Your contribution to the hop is greatly appreciated!

  35. First, let me say I love your photoshoot!! Those quilt holders are as hard to find sometimes as the sunshine, n'est-ce pas? ;-) The Art Gallery line you chose is perfect for this pattern, and sooo worth taking the extra time to NOT strip piece!
