Improv Score #1 - Quilt finished

I have a finished quilt to share today ! And it is goal number one of my list for the 2015 Finish-Along last quarter :-)

Improv Handbook - Score #1 - finished quilt

I am quite pleased with how it turned out. The quilting really adds something to the composition.

Improv Handbook - Score #1 - quilt in progress
Quilting in progress
Actually, this quilt is an exercise "two in one". First I followed Sherri Lynn Wood's piecing process. You can read more about the top here and the piecing process here.
Then I used the top to practice the Craftsy class I took online with Jacquie Gering "Creative quilting with your walking foot". I love her quilt  Traffic and wanted to try the same quilting design : straight lines, each 1/4 inch. This class was recommended by a quilting friend I met recently. And I don't regret buying it ...

Improv Handbook - Score #1 - quilting detail

I used quilting threads from Aurifil. Most of the lines are quilted with grey. For some of them I used a yellow thicker thread. I don't know if it is really visible on the pictures ...

Improv Handbook - Score #1 - quilting detail

In two corners, I enlarge line spacing (1/2 inch and 1 inch).

Dense quilting really gives a texture to the quilt.

I love the way she creates words with quilting.

And she explains the process in the last lesson of her class ! I will try it, but no rush ... One lesson at a time ! ;-)

  1. Love your little quilt. I haven't bought Wood's book (yet) but I have seen some really interesting quilts that were made from her "scores". Improv is so foreign to me, and a little scary, but your quilt is lovely. Like the fabric choices as well. Great job on the quilting too!

    1. Thank you for your comment Ann ! I would recommend Lucie Summers book, Quilt Improv, as well. It is a very useful book for starting improv' quilting.

  2. Love your interpretation of the improv quilt score, much better than mine!

  3. Oh, wow! Your quilt is awesome! Love the way you created vertical movement with same colors sort of stacking on top of each other. Your piecing looks rhythmical with groups repeating and yet still irregular/improv. So cool! Thanks for sharing.

  4. I really like the quilting! Thanks for sharing your link at Stitched in Color!

  5. This is a great quilt, both the piecing and quilting.

  6. I will be watching for you this next lesson. I really want to see it. This lesson created spectacular results so I can only imagine what the next lesson will create. Visiting as part of the 2016 FAL Cheerleading team. Thanks for participating.

  7. Love your version of the 'score'. Great book... I started, and got side-tracked, but loved my final result too!

  8. I followed the link from Stitched in Color to see your quilt, and am so glad I did. I'm just about to begin my first score, and it emboldens me to see the unique and striking results each individual quilter gets when following the same suggestions. I love your quilt. (As did Sherri Lynn Wood--did you see her comment on Rachel's blog?)
