Crosscut Table runner

I wanted to make a table runner for a while and had first in mind to sew "Sticks" blocks. I am not sure about the name ... But that consists in inserting strips in a square.

As you can see on the picture below I am working with this kind of block for a new project - a challenge with a few friends. I will tell you more about it later since I absolutely don't know for the moment where this idea is going ...

Sticks - quilt blocks

When I saw Debbie's Crosscut mini quilt I thought this table runner would be a great opportunity to use her method and give a try at her tutorial. You probably have already seen many versions on the Internet since Debbie recently hosted a Quilt-Along. She wrote a few blog posts about it and you can see pictures on her blog A Quilter's Table.

I reduced the size of the squares given in the tutorial.

Here is what the surface looked like before I cut shapes in it.

I cut squares for the centre and used the left overs to include them in the borders.

I had a lot of issues with feeding while I quilted it ... I first thought it was due to the fabric texture. I used an Essex Linen (linen / cotton) for the background and this is a thicker fabric than usual quilting cotton. But when I came to the binding I suspected my walking foot was not working properly (in contrast to quilting machine, I use my walking foot to sew bindings for years). That was confirmed when I borrowed a walking foot from a friend of mine and could finish to sew my binding easily ...

I was ready to send my walking foot for repair when my husband decided to take it apart completely. Gulp ... He added oil in the mechanism and it worked well !!!

This project was #3 on my list for the third quarter of 2016 Finish-Along.
And speaking of Finish-Along, I entered three finishes for the second quarter and I was lucky enough to win a prize in the lottery ! This prize was a 75£ gift voucher from Oakshott fabrics !!! I have been working with their fabrics for years now using some here and there in a few projects.

I used my gift voucher to order a bundle from the Scandinavia collection and some neutrals as well.
